When the Bible urges us to wait and work for peace, what is it really saying? Peace is about more than the little things that bring individual moments of quiet and calm. Isaiah and John the Baptist help us picture peace as a balance of comfort and confrontation, of cradling and challenge, a new way bursting forth in the wilderness so obviously that all can see it and leave broken ways behind. Centuries after Isaiah proclaimed comfort and John proclaimed challenge, peace can still seem a distant dream; but are we willing to wait for it actively, not settling for anything less than the full sense of the wordâthe fully restored relationship with one another and God?
